Yeah but can you play the Trumpet 4.1 Pro?

I’m currently enjoying this talk from the dynamic Steve Krouse, and I really liked this quotation in particular:

Someone wise on the internet said, “If the violin changed every six months, nobody would learn it,” and I think that’s kind of what’s happening with these AI tools.

This makes me proud of the fact that my deepest creative engagement with AI involved (and continues to involve) a five-year-old model. I have, at this point, learned its particular contours and glitches very well, and I believe that level of understanding is required if something is going to be a true creative medium, rather than … what? A gimmick. A demo?

Steve is a co-founder of Val Town, the platform for writing and hosting little computer programs. I use it nearly every day: it’s lightweight yet very powerful, and whenever I find myself wondering “hey, what if … ?” in a way that connects to code or the web, Val Town is my next stop.
