Here’s a panoramic view of email tracking pixels on the But­ton­down blog. I didn’t realize that Gmail’s treat­ment of these images was so aggres­sive and confounding — great!

This web­site col­lects no data about its readers, but/and his­tor­i­cally I’ve main­tained a little carve-out for email tracking, hon­estly because seeing the open rate (quite high!) has felt like a kind of secu­rity blanket. I think it’s prob­ably time to let that go.

The aspi­ra­tion for this tech­nology remains the same: the speed and pri­vacy of the printed page.
